Midnight sun from the sea

Join us for an evening at sea under the golden light of the midnight sun. We leave Piteå behind and head out through the archipelago. The goal is to find a spot with a clear view of the horizon, enjoy some snacks and something good to drink and experience one of northern Sweden's most special nature phenomenons.

 

We meet at Västra Kajen or Pite Havsbad, and before departure we have a short safety briefing and go over the agenda for the evening. Then we set off and travel out among the islands until we find the place where the conditions for the best view of the evening are. Here you get to experience how the sun slowly approaches the horizon, without disappearing below it.

 

On board, snacks and drinks are served as we travel through the archipelago. There is no stress and no sightseeing list to catch up on, instead we take our time to enjoy the sea, the view and the special feeling of an evening that never really becomes night.

Whether the midnight sun is clearly visible or hidden behind the clouds, the goal is the same: to give you a moment to slow down and experience the bright summer from the sea.

WHAT IS THE MIDNIGHT SUN?

The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon that occurs north of the Arctic Circle during the summer. Due to the tilt of the Earth, the sun continues to be above the horizon even during the night. In Piteå, the midnight sun can normally be experienced from late May to mid-July, with the brightest nights around midsummer. Even outside the period of actual midnight sun, summer nights in Piteå are very bright. The sun sets then, but it never really gets dark.

Around the end of May – mid-July

The exact experience depends on the date, weather and cloud cover. Even when the sun no longer stays above the horizon, the nights in Piteå are very bright during the summer.

 

AN EVENING ON THE SEA'S TERMS

The evening's journey is shaped by the weather, the sea and the light and does not follow a predetermined route. We will search out into the archipelago until we find a place with the clearest view of the horizon possible. The exact route and where we stop may therefore vary from evening to evening. The tour is weather dependent.

If the sky is clear, we can experience the midnight sun in all its glory, with golden and pink tones over the sea. If it is cloudy, the sun may not appear. But in Piteå this does not mean that the night will be dark. Instead, you will experience a bright evening on the sea, where the archipelago is still bathed in daylight even though it is past midnight. Sometimes it is precisely the cloudy evenings that create the most dramatic skies.
